Problem with our University

2023-08-26

I am a student residing in hostel rooms.

In our shared living space, there have been certain challenges that have been impacting my ability to maintain a conducive environment for studying and resting. I believe that as part of the commitment to student welfare, ensuring a harmonious living environment is crucial.

One of the issues I've been facing relates to the lighting situation in our room. I completely understand the need for everyone to have their study time; however, the lights are consistently kept on quite late into the night. This has been causing disruptions to my sleep schedule and affecting my overall well-being. Given the early morning commitments I have (my classes start at 7:30 AM), it becomes challenging for me to manage my schedule effectively. Unlike my roommates, their classes start at 9:30 AM, giving them the flexibility to sleep in if they choose to stay awake late at night.

Moreover, I've encountered difficulties when it comes to using my personal electronic devices. While I try to keep the volume at a reasonable level, it appears that even moderate volumes are causing disturbances for my roommates. This, too, has been contributing to an uncomfortable living situation.

I want to emphasize that my intention is not to cause any inconvenience to my roommates, but rather to find a balanced solution that ensures the comfort and well-being of all residents. I've been in touch with the relevant admission officers and my admission counselor for the past couple of months, expressing my concerns and seeking a room change. I have been met with assurances that the matter would be addressed, but unfortunately, a resolution has not been reached yet.

Before joining the college, my admission counselor had assured me that any problems I face would be taken care of. When I reached out to him about this issue, he advised me to write a formal complaint letter and send it to him. It has been a month or two since I followed his advice, but no solution has been received. I have also discussed this matter with fellow students and have come to know that I am not the only one facing this problem. I have even spoken to students from other colleges to inquire about similar issues, and they have informed me that their universities provide a dedicated study room for each hostel that is open 24/7. This setup allows students who wish to study to use the study room while those who want to sleep can do so without disturbance.

It is disheartening to find myself in this situation, especially as I am currently working for the university's Public Engagement team. I am actively engaging with the public on behalf of the university, yet it seems that the university's concern for my well-being is not reciprocated. How can I effectively represent the university when the university itself does not prioritize my basic needs?

I sincerely hope that you can understand my perspective and the challenges I've been facing. As a student, my primary goal is to succeed academically, and I believe that a supportive living environment greatly contributes to that success. I kindly request your intervention in this matter and a clarification on the steps that can be taken to address my situation.

Thank you for taking the time to read my concerns.
